Last week I photographed this gut renovated brownstone in Park Slope, Brooklyn for architect Greg Epstein. I’ve shot a few of these in the past but nothing quite like this.

Old House in Bushwick Brooklyn

I recently met a French filmaker here in Bushwick who bought on old house at the southern end of Jefferson St. While the filmaker will eventually renovate this old space he’s living in it now as is. These photos have the look and beauty of an abandon space (a very popular subject in photography right now) with the exception that there is obviosly someone living here.

Manhattan Loft: Kicking it Old School

Normally I am commissioned to photograph a home by an interior designer or an architect. In this case it was the homeowner a successful artist with pieces in collections all over the world including the Metropolitan here in New York. She and her late husband, a successful architect, began renovating this former hat factory in 1979.

The floors and the ceiling were left untouched as the architect wanted to stay true to the way the space was originally used. The front of the loft is the office and living area featuring a skylight that is exactly the way it was when hats were being made here. It also features some of the homeowner’s artwork which look like strange creatures.

Also, in the front of the loft are the kitchen and dining areas. You’ll notice on the left are dividing walls using sheetrock. On the right however the walls are Japanese like screens made of light wood and canvas.

The screens are moveable as well

The loft narrows as you walk past the screens. On the right is the architects studio left exactly as it was the day he died.

As you get to the end of this corridor the loft opens up again to an artist studio where the homeowner does her work

New Work: The Bushwick Project

I’ve been very busy the past two months shooting portraits for my book on Bushwick. For each portrait I have only corresponded with the subject via email before the shoot. I enter their space for the first time without ever speaking to them or knowing what they look like. In other words I am going in basically blind. This is hands down my favorite way of working.
